Ever wondered what it’s like to be the "General" of the starting line? Here is your chance to trade the sidelines for the command center.
We are looking for members and guests to join the SSYC Race Committee for the legendary Newport to Dana Point sprint!
This isn't just a boat ride—it’s an insider’s look at the heart of sailing. As part of the RC boat, you aren't just watching the race; you are making it happen.
While the racers are sweating the tactics, you’ll be at the center of the offshore drama. Once we toss the dock lines and head out, we’ll be anchoring off the Balboa Pier to establish the official starting line.
As a member of the Race Committee boat, you’ll help:
Set the Line: Help drop the tetrahedron and scout the horizon from our anchored position.
Manage the Countdown: Experience the adrenaline of the "rolling start" sequences.
Command the Fleet: Watch dozens of yachts jockey for position just yards away from our hull as we signal the start of their 14.2-mile journey.
Whether you want to roll up your sleeves and learn the ropes of race management or simply sit back and enjoy the best view of the Pacific, there’s a spot for you on deck.
9:30 AM: Meet at the Newport Marina Park dock.
9:45 AM: Lines away! We leave the dock for the open water.
10:30 AM: Anchored 200 yards south of Balboa Pier. We’ll check in the fleet and prep the line.
11:00 AM – 12:20 PM: Action time! Four 5-minute rolling starts.
1:15 PM: Mission accomplished. We head back to the dock after a morning of high-seas coordination.
The race ends in Dana Point, but the fun continues at the Dana Point Yacht Club. Join the fleet upstairs in the bar area at 7:00 PM (or earlier if the wind is howling!) for the trophy presentation. It’s a great chance to mingle with the skippers and celebrate a day on the water.
Parking: Arrive early! Look for free parking on the main street or Bay Ave (be sure to read those signs).
Guests: All are welcome!
Paperwork: Non-members must complete the online waiver before boarding:
