2025 Commodore’s Cruise - San Ignacio and Guerrero Negro via Loreto, BCS

San Ignacio Lagoon is a gray whale sanctuary, but it is also one of only two undeveloped nurseries and breeding grounds of the Pacific gray whale worldwide. It is a renowned destination for whale watching, particularly during the winter months when gray whales migrate to the area to breed and calve. Here is what you need to know:
- The whales arrive in late December and early January, and they stay until early to late April.
- February and March: These months are considered the best time to visit for the highest chance of seeing whales and their calves.
What to Expect:
- Close Encounters: Unique opportunities for close encounters with gray whales. You may be able to witness playful behaviors like breaching, tail slapping, and spy hopping.
- Touch a Whale: In some cases, experienced guides may allow you to gently touch a whale, creating an unforgettable experience.
- Calving and Nursing: Witness the incredible sight of newborn calves swimming alongside their mothers.
- Other Wildlife: Besides gray whales, you might also spot dolphins, sea lions, and various bird species during your whale watching tour.
