SSYC History
Originally known as South Shore Sailing Club, the club is a senior member of Southern California Yachting Association and have offered racing opportunities to its membership for nearly sixty years. Founded in 1957 South Shore was among only 3 other clubs in the harbor: NHYC, BYC, and LIYC. Bob Gammon served as our first Commodore in 1958.
Our original Port and clubhouse was located at 2527 West Coast Highway in Mariner’s Mile two doors from Josh Slocums restaurant, which has changed hands many times. We built the docks, breakwater, clubhouse, boat shed and office building on the property. We were at the clubhouse from about 1961 to 2004 when our lease ran out and the property had been sold to a charter boat company. From there we moved to our current location sharing a building with NBYC.
